Lesson 4: Special Teams Sociology 323

In this lesson the class will learn about who Teddy Williams is and why it means good things for Panther nation... I think? Gotta be honest here, the lesson plan the Mr. Gettleman left behind is a bit lacking in information.

If you heard that the Panthers heard signed a CB that could be listed in a program as "T. Williams" to a two-year deal, you probably got excited with the thought that Green Bay CB Tramon Williams was on his way to Charlotte. Then you were quickly disappointed when you found out that T. Williams is actually Teddy Williams, a 26 year old with 1 - count it, 1 - defensive snap in his entire football career. Including college. Because he did not even play football in college!

"Fast" Teddy Williams signed a two year pact worth up to $2.3 million to be a special teams ace. He was a track star at UT-San Antonio and is said to run a sub-4.3 40 yard dash. In the video below, Williams over does it a little bit as a gunner for the Chicago Bears, but his speed is clearly evident.

No, Teddy Williams is not Tramon Williams. He has not demonstrated any defensive value whatsoever. However, the special teams phase has been ignored for too long by the Panthers front office. While this was not the move Panthers fans wanted, it may be the move the team needed.

That's all for Lesson 4.

Homework - Watch the linked video!

Whether you think GM Dave Gettleman has had a strong offseason or not, Williams's speed in this video shows why the front office and coaching staff think he merits a two year contract, even despite the obvious inexperience.
