Lesson 3: Draft Geology 212

For this lesson we will delve into a possible hidden gem WR prospect for the Panthers who might be available on Day 2 or 3 of the 2015 NFL Draft.

Panthers fans have clamored for a competent #2 WR since the days of Muhsin Muhammad. I declare on this day that I have found the receiver to take on this challenge - UCF WR Breshad Perriman.

Measuring in at 6'2" and 212 pound, Perriman looks the part of an NFL edge receiver. While he did not run at the combine, he is projected to run around a 4.4 40 yard dash at his pro day in two weeks. He has shown the ability to make wild receptions reminiscent of Kelvin Benjamin, but he also possesses superior open field speed and agility to Benjamin. Perriman demonstrates the awareness necessary to get open when his QB scrambles and displays a large catch radius. He even boasts an NFL pedigree - his father, Brett Perriman, played in the NFL for 10 years after being a second round pick of the New Orleans Saints.

On the negative side, Perriman draws a couple other unfortunate comparisons to Benjamin: a penchant for drops and mediocre route running ability. Despite his large frame, Perriman does not always use his size to his advantage, as he can get pushed around by smaller DBs at times. Perriman also appears fairly disinterested in run blocking.

Look here for video of Perriman against East Carolina University. Granted, ECU is not a premier defense, but this game tape shows you flashes of brilliance as well as a couple of clumsy plays.

Perriman strikes me as a slightly smaller, but faster version of Kelvin Benjamin for the obvious reasons I outlined above. If there is any WR coach that I would trust to shepherd these two young talents into stardom, it would be Panthers WR Coach Ricky Proehl.

While he has prototypical size and speed, his concentration drops will cause Perriman to last into the second or third round.

That's all for Lesson 3.

What second or third day receiver do you think makes the most sense for the Panthers? A few names to consider: Breshad Perriman, Phillip Dorsett, Tyler Lockett, Nelson Agholor, Rashad Greene, and Tre' McBride.
