Extra Credit Assignment: Greg Jennings Visit

The reported Greg Jennings visit has Panthers fans abuzz - how would he fit the roster and future plans.

Physical Attributes

Jennings is listed at 6'0" and 195 pounds, and he boasts more quickness than speed at this point of his career. He will turn 32 early on in the 2015 season and has played at least 13 games in every season except his final one in Green Bay. Despite his age, Jennings still has decent speed as evidenced by his 20 receptions of at least 20 yards over the last two years.

Role / Skills

The majority of Jennings's routes came out of the slot his last few years, and he excels at getting open when plays break down. Jennings has strong route running skills and a high football IQ, as he can read zones and possesses above average field awareness as demonstrated by his making 40 first downs on 59 receptions last year.

Roster Fit
"Family" and "community" are two words that are often used to describe the atmosphere in the Panthers locker room and throughout the franchise. However, Jerricho Cotchery seemingly fills the role of veteran mentor within the receiving corps, though Cotchery is not quite the offensive weapon that Jennings is at this point in their careers. I am not sure that Dave Gettleman and company will sign Jennings to a contract without releasing Cotchery - there are already 8 wide receivers currently on the Panthers roster.

However, Jennings would certainly bring an element to the passing game that I cannot recall them having previously in a dynamic slot receiver. He would immediately be the second best wide receiver on the roster. Bringing in Jennings also means that the Panthers can wait to draft a receiver later on into the middle rounds of the upcoming draft.
